Project Brief
This is a total kitchen makeover in a 1957 home.
The original painted cabinets, pink laminate and
avocado green appliances were original to the
home. The new homeowner wanted a more modern kitchen
area with plenty of storage. The walls between
the kitchen and breakfast area, as well as part
of the wall in the adjacent den area were removed
to make the kitchen and breakfast area approximately
450 sq ft. An additional 150 sq ft of space was
added on to the back of the breakfast room for
a separate utility room and powder bath. By coffering
the ceiling up to 9 feet, it makes the area seem
much larger and open, which is perfect for their
entertaining needs.
The owner chose Cordell cabinets in a medium
cherry stain. Granite countertops and black appliances
complement the cabinets. Because the customer
entertains often, a big feature of this kitchen
is the lighting options that were installed. We
installed 10 recessed light fixtures in the ceiling,
under cabinet lighting for each of the wall cabinets
and overhanging light fixtures on the top of the
cabinets over the crown molding, all on dimmer
switches, giving the customer the opportunity
to change the mood of the room by simply flipping
a switch or moving the dimmer setting. . The double
wall oven is set on an angle in the corner and
also has a warming drawer under it. The customer
initially did not want an island but now admits
the 4 x 4 foot island is one of the best features
of the kitchen, both as a work station and for
serving food during a party. On the far wall of
the breakfast area, we installed an under counter
wine chiller and custom built stemware racks behind
customized glass cabinet doors. The far walls
are anchored with 8 foot tall storage cabinets
on each side. The pantry is 3 ft wide and 8 ft
high. The pantry, as well as all of the lower
cabinets, is fitted with rollout shelves that
allow the homeowner to easily access the 24-inch
deep cabinets. There is also a large drawer under
the built-in microwave that the stores all of
the appliances that often clutter counter space;
the coffeemaker, toaster, blender and other appliances
all fit in the deep drawer that also rolls out
and is behind doors. The kitchen is filled with
storage space. |
